MACHINE AESTHETIC: The Art of the Harley

Opening Reception: First Friday, July 1, 6-8 pm
Photographs of "Old School Bikers" by Doug Barber represent the hard core side of the bikers' world. The show includes vintage Harley-Davidson motorcycles from the collection of David and Jennifer LeVan, owners of Battlefield Harley-Davidson. A celebration of the beauty and artistry embedded in a functional machine, this exhibition showcases seven important Harley models dating from 1945 to the present. Also included are original paintings by Scott Jacobs and David Uhl.
The Schmucker Art Gallery, at Gettysburg College, is located at 300 North Washington Street, Gettysburg, PA

“This exhibition will feature motorcycles and motorcycle related art. Celebrating personal passions for the road and the vehicle that outdates the automobile, this exhibition will include motorcycles of many makes from local collectors and artwork inspired by the machines from artists like Andy Warhol, Richard Prince, Thomas Zummer, James Hyde and others.
Curated by Rusty Baker, the Susquehanna Art Museum’s Executive Director, the exhibition promises to spark conversations about art and motorcycles. “The motorcycle as an icon and design object makes it a perfect touchstone to begin a conversation about art, especially when there is so much art inspired by motorcycles,” Baker says. “That these two things share any number of qualities is just the icing on the cake. They are both fragile. They both propel people to strong emotions ranging from fear to delight.”
